Astronomy and astrology both describe objects and patterns in the sky, but they do not answer the same kind of question. Keeping that distinction visible makes a chart easier to understand and prevents an interpretation from being presented as a measured fact.
The short distinction
Astronomy is a science. It observes and models physical objects and events, such as a planet’s position at a stated time. Its results depend on declared coordinates, time standards, software, and calculation settings.
Astrology, as used on Astrologican, is a reflective tradition. It assigns symbolic meanings to calculated positions and relationships. Those meanings can organize prompts for reflection, but they are not scientific predictions or evidence that celestial bodies cause personal events.

One chart, two layers
Suppose software places two bodies a certain angular distance apart. The angle is a geometric result. Calling that relationship a trine, choosing an allowed orb, and discussing ease or flow are astrological conventions. A trustworthy page identifies both layers instead of blending them.
Astrologican therefore treats timestamps, coordinate systems, software versions, and geometric results as method information. Interpretive copy is labelled as interpretation or reflection. A normal build verifies the committed calculation data without a network request.
Conventions still matter
A calculation can be deterministic without being convention-free. Tropical and sidereal zodiacs use different reference systems. House systems divide a chart in different ways. An aspect orb is a chosen tolerance. Two practitioners can start with the same astronomical positions and produce different chart structures because their declared conventions differ.
That is not a reason to hide settings. It is a reason to show them.
Common misconceptions
- “A zodiac sign is the same as its named constellation.” A zodiac sign is a defined sector in a chosen zodiac system; a constellation is an observed region of the sky.
- “A precise degree makes the interpretation scientifically proven.” Precision in the input does not validate the symbolic meaning attached to it.
- “Astronomers and astrologers calculate different planets.” They may use the same underlying positions while asking different questions and applying different conventions.
- “Reflective means meaningless.” A prompt can be personally useful without being a verified prediction. The honest test is whether it is framed for what it is.
A practical reading rule
When reading any astrology page, ask three questions:
- What was measured or calculated?
- Which convention turns that result into chart language?
- Which sentence is an interpretation rather than a fact?
