Houses are twelve sectors of a birth chart used in astrology to organize themes into areas of life. They answer a different question from signs: a sign suggests how a chart function is expressed, while a house suggests where that theme might be noticed.
The house sequence
| House | Common traditional territory | A neutral reflective prompt |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Approach, presence, self-direction | How do I enter a situation? |
| 2 | Resources, possessions, values | What do I maintain or value? |
| 3 | Learning, messages, nearby context | How do I gather and share information? |
| 4 | Home, roots, private foundation | What creates a sense of base? |
| 5 | Play, creativity, personal expression | What do I make for its own sake? |
| 6 | Routines, service, upkeep | Which practice needs attention? |
| 7 | Partnership and one-to-one exchange | What do I negotiate with another? |
| 8 | Shared resources, trust, transition | What requires shared responsibility? |
| 9 | Study, worldview, distance | What expands the frame? |
| 10 | Public role, responsibility, direction | What work is visible or accountable? |
| 11 | Groups, allies, collective aims | Which community supports the aim? |
| 12 | Retreat, closure, unseen patterns | What needs rest, release, or examination? |
These territories vary by school and do not predict events. Use them as a map for questions, not a list of guaranteed outcomes.
Why the house system matters
There is more than one accepted method for drawing house cusps. Some systems create houses of equal zodiac length; others calculate divisions from time and place. The same planet can fall in a different house when the system changes, especially near a cusp.
A chart page should name its system. If a reading depends on a borderline placement, compare the underlying degree and acknowledge the sensitivity instead of treating one house label as absolute.
Angles and birth time
The Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Imum Coeli are major chart angles. They depend strongly on time and location and anchor or interact with the houses according to the chosen system. Without a reliable birth time, exact angles and houses are not reliable.
A three-part reading
For “Venus in the seventh house,” separate the pieces:
- Venus supplies a traditional theme of relating, values, and preference.
- The seventh house supplies the context of one-to-one exchange.
- Sign and aspects add style and relationships.
A reflective question could be, “Which values need to be explicit in a partnership?” It should not become a promise about marriage.
If a house prompt touches health, money, law, safety, or another person’s motives, stop at the question and use relevant evidence, consent, and qualified advice for the decision. A chart sector does not supply those facts.
